DIY #1 Blob Mirror

Hi decorating enthusiasts!

You've probably seen all the trends around mirrors; mozaic mirror, foam mirror, this mirror, that mirror... there's something for every taste and budget!

Today I'm going to present you the first DIY of a long series. It's a mirror (no, we didn't get it 😉) that is super original, quick to make, and above all, not very expensive!

mirror with original coloured shape

Material

As it is not very easy at the moment to get everything you need because of the coronavirus, I have found this DIY with only products that you can easily find on the internet, and that you may even have at home, clever isn't it? 😇

So, you will need:

  • a mirror (logical 😆), preferably without a frame around it. If your mirror has a frame you will have to remove it. You can take any size mirror you like. I found mine in a shop in France for only 5€, but finding a cheap mirror is not a difficult task these days. You can easily find them on the internet for less than £10, and even adhesives, great for fixing it to the wall when finished!
  • polymer clay that can be baked. I opted for staedtler Fimo clay, mine is lavender and it's colour number 62. It took me one and a half packs of clay to make the whole mirror. There are 57g per small packet. The larger your mirror, the more paste you will need!
  • a tube of super glue or a glue gun (I chose the super glue, less visible and more resistant!)
  • a sheet of A4 paper
  • a pen or marker
  • and your hands!

Decorating tips!

  • I chose to work on a small mirror of 20 cm x 20 cm because I find the result more beautiful on a small mirror, but that's up to each one! You can also choose the shape you want, round square, rectangle...
  • Choose a bright colour to give a touch of colour to an interior that is not very colourful, or opt for simple colours (black, white, beige, grey...) if you are not comfortable with colours. Indeed, the Fimo clays allows you to choose the colour and the effect that you wish! You have fluo, glitter, leather effects ... let your creativity and your desire speak!
  • You are free to make the shape you want, the good thing about this mirror is that it is unique! Everyone will have their own.

Step 1

Once you have gathered all the material I advise you to trace the outline of the mirror on a white sheet of paper in order to have a reference to create your shape in fimo clay with the dimensions of your mirror on the sheet. You can also directly draw it on baking paper.

If you do not do this you risk deforming your spaghetti fimo by moving it on the mirror to see if you like the result on the mirror (not cool when you spend time to give it a shape).

Step 2

Once you have created this mark, start shaping your clay. You need to heat it in your hands so that it becomes easy to shape.

Start to make a long spaghetti and give it the thickness you want.

Step 3

The long spaghetti is formed. Now you can start to shape it as you wish.I chose to give my spaghetti a strange shape, but you can also make a large circle, waves, small circles...

You will have understood, this step is yours. Let your creativity speak for itself by giving it the curves you want!

If you like my shape you can of course reproduce it.

I advise you to make your shape on baking paper in order to have your paper marker in transparency so that you don't touch your shape when you have to put it in the oven.

Step 4

If you are at step 4 you have done most of the work, well done!

Now all you have to do is put your spaghetti clay in the oven for 30 minutes at 130 C° (be careful not to put it too hot).

Step 5

Once cooked and still hot your shape will not be quite hard yet. Wait 15/20 minutes for it to cool down. Also, if you put glue on your hot spaghetti, it might spill, which is not what you want!

Once it has cooled down, you can glue the shape to the mirror. I advise you to put a dot of glue in each corner so that it is as strong as possible and does not fall off.

And tadaaaaa, you have your result! I hope this tutorial has brought you a few moments of reading, or a few hours of manual work!
